Google Search Console

SEO course - lesson 7

I can genuinely recommend every webmaster to register their own website with Google Search Console. This free tool from Google offers a wealth of interesting and important features for your search engine optimization. You will learn exactly what these are in this lesson.

Tool Tip

7.1 Registering a site with Google Search Console

  1. Log in to your Google account and then click on this link to Google Search Console. Once the page is open, click on the blue “Start Now” button.
  2. First, you need to add a property (=your website). There is usually a button for this in the left navigation bar (unfortunately, I can’t show you exactly how it looks the first time because we already have multiple properties).
  3. Next, you need to select the property type. I always choose URL prefix because it provides several verification options.
  4. After that, you will have several options to verify ownership. I always choose HTML tag and add the displayed code to the head section of the site using a plugin. Then, you need to click “Verify” again, and from then on, you can use the Search Console.
  5. Most content management systems like WordPress (using plugins), Wix, Jimdo & Co. offer the option to integrate the code snippet shown in step 4 relatively easily into the website.
In WordPress, for example, you can use the Rank Math plugin under “General Settings –> Webmaster Tools” to add the code and confirm the property.

7.2 Data analysis with Google Search Console

Under Performance, you can see how often your page was displayed and clicked in the last three months.

Below you can see the most common search queries and how often these keywords were clicked on.

Attention: The number of clicks on individual keywords is sometimes too low (these clicks do not add up to the total number of clicks). I suspect for privacy reasons.

You can also perform this analysis for individual pages.

And afterwards, you can filter the individual page by search queries, time period, etc..

7.3 Other features of Google Search Console

In addition to data analysis, Google Search Console also has numerous features and important information for your website.

  • Request indexing of individual pages (see point 6.2.2)
  • Removal of individual pages from the Google index
  • Submit an XML sitemap: This is a sitemap specifically for search engines. Such sitemaps help search engines understand your site better.
  • Information about the usability of your site
  • Information about the security of your site
  • Information about links
