For webmasters, especially at the beginning of search engine optimization, the question of how often a term is actually searched for on Google is extremely exciting. And as a private individual, you may have already asked yourself how often your name is googled. You can use free tools to find out the monthly search volume of individual keywords. In this article we will briefly introduce you to two of the tools that we can particularly recommend for free keyword research.

The difficulty with common names

Of course, if your name is "Oliver Smith" and you live in the United States, it's difficult to figure out exactly how often you're referred to when someone searches for your name. It might help to add your city when doing keyword research. It also becomes very difficult if you have the same name as a celebrity.

Tool-Tipp 1: Keyword Generator Tool from SE Ranking

Tool-Tipp 2: Ubersuggest Chrome Extension

If you use the Chrome browser, you can install the Ubersuggest Chrome extension with just a few clicks. You can download this extension for free, although you are likely paying with the live data the tool collects from you. After installation, you can see live, directly while Googling, how often the entered keyword is searched for monthly. The great thing about the Chrome extension is that you can check the search volume of up to 20 keywords per day as of (02/2025). This is relatively high compared to other free tools. In addition to the search volume of individual keywords, you also get additional keyword ideas or the Domain Authority (DA) of individual websites. The DA indicates how strong the backlink profile of a particular page is. One important tip: Always check beforehand whether the privacy policies of the respective Chrome extension are acceptable to you.

Further information on the question of how often search terms are googled

Below you will find some questions that I am frequently asked regarding keyword research and the search volume of keywords.

1. Where does the tools’ data come from and how accurate is it?

Google has its own tool for keyword research, the so-called Keyword Planner. You can use this if you have an account with Google AdWords. We can only assume that the data from Ubersuggest and Seobility is also taken from the Keyword Planner. When making comparisons, we at least found that 95+% of the data matches that from the Keyword Planner.

The data are predictions that, in our experience, are quite accurate. For example, we can later use other tools to check how often individual keywords appeared on our pages.

There’s just one thing you should keep in mind when searching for keywords: Every now and then, Google combines data into a word group and adds up the search volume. For example, “Photographer Hamburg” and “Photographer Hamburg” each show a search volume of 2900. However, it may be that “Photographer Hamburg” is only searched 2000 times per month and “Photographer Hamburg” is searched 900 times per month. Of course, it’s also possible that both actually have 2900 searches per month. You can only really know if your website ranks for both keywords and then sees how often the keywords were actually shown on Google.

2. What does it mean when search volume shows 0 or <10? Is a word really not searched?

A search volume of 0 or <10 in the ad only means that a keyword is searched for less than 10 times per month on average. Of course, you can’t rule out the possibility that it will be searched for on Google or another search engine from time to time.

3.What does the search volume of individual term depend on?

The search volume depends crucially on whether it is a so-called short-tail or long-tail keyword. Short-tail keywords only consist of 1-2 words, are quite unspecific and often have a high search volume. Lontail keywords consist of 4 or more keywords and usually have lower search volume.
However, it is often still worthwhile to optimize your website for long-tail keywords because the competition is often lower and it is easier to achieve good rankings or clicks on your own site.

4. What types of keywords are there?

In search engine optimization, different types of keywords are distinguished. The search intent of users plays a crucial role in categorizing these keywords. Here are some common types of keywords:

  • Informational Keywords – Users primarily want to obtain information on a topic.
  • Commercial Keywords – The search indicates an intent to make a purchase.
  • Brand Keywords – Search queries that include brand names like “BMW” or “Zalando.”
  • Navigational Keywords – Users aim to reach specific target pages on a website, such as “Company Contact.”
  • Transactional Keywords – Users want to perform an action, such as “Free Software Download.”

This distinction helps in providing the right content on your website for each keyword type.
